FARC and Colombian govt battle on Ecuadorian Soil

So I don't know if any of you have heard the latest news, but recently there was an ambush on Ecuadorian soil that consisted of FARC and the Colombian government on Saturday. FARC (Fuerzas amadas revolucionarios de Colombia) is a guerrilla group that has existed in Colombia for many many years but it is considered a terrorist group by the Colombian govt as well as the United States. Ecuador's govt. recognizes it as an irregular armed group. (Way to stay neutral Ecuador) Long story short, FARC members crossed the border and were camping out in Ecuador when along came the Colombian army to shoot and kill 20 guerrillas. This wouldn't have been such a big deal if they had done it on Colombian soil but President Rafael Correa was pissed that it happened here. Of course, he doesn't want to retaliate with armed forces but it does not bode well for negotiations between Colombia and Ecuador. He did, however, send some troops to the border. The problem is that the all along the border is jungle and it is super hard to patrol it. If you are interested in learning more about it google it and I am sure a bunch of articles will pop up. Pres. Bush dos (haha he is forever Bush dos since one of my professors here called him that) made a speech today regarding the situation saying that the US stands behind Colombia as it continues to "confront violence and terrorism and fights drug traffickers" and that "we fully oppose any acts of aggression that could destabilize the region." My host dad thinks that the Colombian govt. should not be pardoned for this while other people here think that it is a good thing that FARC members were killed since they are terrorists. It's all kind of messy. Usually is with these circumstances. You know that if this kind of thing happened in the US with Mexico the govt would be all over invading and making a huge scene about actions on foreign soil, but since the Colombian govt. was fighting the war on drugs it doesn't matter that they trespassed. If you have any comments I would be interested to hear what people think. This blog allows anyone to comment on it. Just click on the button below.
